Audition song suggestions for the character Alison Bechdel (alto

Alison is the narrator of the play– a lesbian cartoonist in her 40s with vivid and thoughtful memories and dry, grounded sense of humor. Her gift of observation and self-awareness becomes an obstacle when she begins crafting her graphic autobiography and is forced to confront the memories of her late father.

Audition song suggestions for the character Medium Alison (mezzo)

This is Alison at 19-years-old, a college freshman at Oberlin College at the threshold of self-discovery. Despite her bookishness, hyper-intelligence, and mild social ineptitude, she finds a friend and lover in her classmate Joan who helps her navigate her first sexual experience, as well as coming out to her parents.

Audition song suggestions for the character Small Alison (alto)

Like most 9-year-olds, small Alison Bechdel is insatiably curious and precocious. But unlike other children, Small Alison is exceptionally clever, intuitive to the troubles in her parent’s marriage, and understanding of her own boundaries when it comes to expressing femininity (or not).

Audition song suggestions for the character Bruce Bechdel (baritone)

Bruce is a father, husband, high school English teacher, and a funeral home director. Through his hobby of refurbishing old homes, we see his eccentricity and obsessive nature as an outlet for his closeted homosexuality. He is inconsistent and hot-tempered as a husband and father, often making irresponsible decisions to support his trysts with younger men (and sometimes boys). Bruce ended his own life during Alison’s first year at college.

Audition song suggestions for the character Helen Bechdel (mezzo)

While her husband continued his reproachable behavior and affairs, Helen retreated. This distance left her exhausted, defeated, and emotionally distant from her three children, Alison, John, and Christian. It isn’t until many years after Alison comes out as gay that Helen shares the story of her life and marriage and encourages Alison to forge her own path of self-acceptance.

Audition song suggestions for the character John and Christian Bechdel (young treble voice)

John and Christian are Alison’s younger and older brothers, respectively. John is eager, imaginative, and leads the three in their musical sibling “commercial” number. Christian is the oldest (somewhere between 10-12 years old), smart, and sometimes overshadowed by the strong-willed Alison and his endearing younger brother.

Audition song suggestions for the character Roy/Pete/Mark/Bobby Jeremy (tenor)

One actor plays all of these characters who color Alison Bechdel’s childhood memories. Roy, Pete, and Mark are different men whose lives have intersected with the Bechdel family because of Bruce’s affairs and advances. Bobby Jeremy is the stylish 1970s lead singer in Small Alison’s imagination.
